Week 15: Project #5 Art Criticism Article

Blog Reflection Submission Requirements:
Answer the Following Questions:

1. Which projects did you review? The project I chose to review was called “Unconditional” Artistic Displays of the Mother’s Unconditional Love for her Child.

2. Why did you select the Exhibit you critiqued? I selected this PowerPoint because it was one of the few that caught my eye it was based on a mother’s love toward her child.

3. What challenges did you face in writing the critique article and how did you overcome them?  The only challenge I had in critiquing this PowerPoint was finding what to even write about. I felt like there were more positives than negatives so for me there wasn’t much to critic.

4. How do you feel about critiquing your peers work? At first I felt it was kind of weird; not having to critic someone’s work but having someone looks at mine. Overall, I felt like critiquing your peers work helps them be acknowledged for their hard work and as well gives feedback to maybe something that could be improved for future projects.

5. Would you like to read the critique your peers wrote about your Art Curation Project? Yes, I would like to read what my peers have said about my project even though it makes me nervous I like hearing feedback whether good or bad.

6. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your finished article and why? I would rate my article an 8 or higher because I really thought out what should be written and really acknowledged everything that was in the PowerPoint and critiqued it to my best ability.

7. Did you enjoy working on this project? Overall, I did enjoy being able to look at my peers work but I can honestly say I didn’t enjoy having to write a long article about it.

Week 15: Art Gallery Visit #3

Create a reflection journal on your Blog and answer the following questions:
1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them?
4. How does this piece represent you?
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
7. What do you think of your final artwork?

When I began this project I wasn’t sure on what artist to get inspiration from so I decided to look for artist that are featured in Burchfield Penny Art Center and I found a number of people that had portraits that inspired me into how to make my own. The first artist I found was George William Eggers in the drawing called “Portrait of an Old Woman”. Another Artist I found interesting was Milton Rogovin his portrait was untitled but it shows a woman with a book in her hand and if you look at her face you see tons of emotion. Another artist I found interesting was Alexander O. Levy the portrait is titled unknown. All of these portraits helped me decide on the media to use in my own portrait. I chose pencil because many of the artists I saw used it and I feel like it’s one of the easiest things to use especially when drawing. One of the challenges I faced in creating my self portrait was drawing. I’m not a skilled artist that could make beautiful art pieces but in the end I ended up with a portrait I’m proud of so that’s all that matters. My portrait also has the colors and shape of everything that represents me which makes this portrait unique. One element that I applied to my art work was emotion. The portraits I picked showed tons of emotion and I wanted a picture of me to show the same. Overall, I enjoyed creating a portrait of myself and I’m happy with the result.

Questions and Topics for Your Blog Posting:
1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? My main expectations for this course were to be able to learn beyond the typical of what is taught when it comes to art. During this course I got learn more in dept information on the history of art and got to learn about many techniques that are used. In the end, the expectations were met.

2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting? In the beginning of this course when I thought of art it was always creating something with crafts or painting. Now that I’ve gone through this course I see that art is more than just a painting it’s a visual representation of something much more meaningful.

3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so? I believe my favorite artist was my younger sister because she creates things that come from the heart and that are important to her. Even though many consider art to be the most foolish things the art she creates are the most meaningful ones to me and her being my favorite artist isn’t going to change.

 4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different? I feel like in any online course there comes their advantages and disadvantages. Taking an online course for me was pretty easier than just having to go to class but then at the same time this class had so much work to complete on a weekly basis it came out to be more than what I had expected. In the end, I feel like online courses gives you freedom to a certain extent but also shows your true potential to being on top of things.

In the second video “An introduction to the Italian Renaissance” in this video it shows how many artists developed their techniques and it also shows many images that represent the Romans influence on the Renaissance of art. In the third video “The Critics: Stories from the Inside Pages” the film focuses on the journey that Dr. Dwight went through in order to answer a specific question. The overall result was a look at criticism as an art form. Lastly in “The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture, the film focuses on the 1900 World’s Fair which was a time that promoted the celebration of different ethnicity. They also show numerous photographs, posters, and clips from renowned art historians all around the world.
