Week 2 Blog Post

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the first video, “Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts” it discusses the ideas of many key figures in the understanding of aesthetics. Such as Plato, Francis, and Kant to Leon Battista Alberti etc. One thing I learned from this video was Plato’s perspectives on art. He felt that beauty was based on the eye of the beholder and I strongly agree with that. In the second video “CARTA: Neurobiology Neurology and Art and Aestheticstwo scientist share their insights on neurobiology and talk about the human experiences and aesthetics. Jean-Pierre Change also talks about human evolution and its connection to art. He does this by analyzing the human brain.

2. Which philosopher's theory on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosophers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.
Once again I feel the philosopher’s theory that is most important to me is Plato’s. His time in history was in the 5th century and he discussed what his definition of beauty was as I discussed in the last post. He felt that just because something was considered a work of art it didn’t always have to be beautiful. It was only considered beautiful depending on the person’s perspective.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
When it came to Changeux view of aesthetics and art I liked what he had to say it was interesting how he tied the human brain to art. He showed certain sculls where used as tools. In addition, Ramachandrans view on aesthetics and art was different. He discusses the different brain reactions to real life events and compares the brains same reaction to when we perceive art.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
These videos and the readings from the text can relate in many ways. However, when it comes to reading the text the details are more indebt when it comes aesthetics and art. While these videos shows a perspective of certain individuals.  In all the videos some up what was discussed in the textbook.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?
When it comes to the first film on the philosophers I found it the most interesting out of the two. I felt like this because I found it very interesting when I got to learn about Plato’s views on the definition of beauty and as well the other perspectives. When it came to the second film I only found the ties of human evolution to art interesting but besides that I found the video long and quite boring but on top of that the man’s accent didn’t help much. Overall, I like being able to relate back to the topics that I have been reading this past week.
