The process of creating my art exhibition was a good
experience it fun and frustrating at the same time. The theme I chose for my PowerPoint
was love and relationships. I chose this theme because it’s something I really
value in my life and I know it’s a topic that makes the world go round. The
first thing I did in the project was look for paintings that I felt portrayed
what relationships were all about whether good or bad. Overall, the project was
a lot of work but worth every minute spent on it. I got to learn a lot about
what inspired artist to create these pieces.

Week 13 & 14 Blog Post
1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. In the first video
watched “The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop art” I got to learn on how
Lowbrow came about and the huge sensation it was, and the video mainly focuses
on the type of art it was. In the second video “Displaying Modern Art: The Tate
Approach” this film mainly focuses on the Museum of Modern Art and how their
art work was displayed representing the different art movements. In the third
video “Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology” I got to learn on how
the Indians bones were collected for scientific purposes and there was a huge
debate on whether or not the remains should be kept or returned to their
ancestors. In the last video “An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and the
Metropolitan” I got to learn about the legacy of Philippe de Montebello and
what he did for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
2.
Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition
project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not. I felt like in
some ways the videos do relate to the creation of my Art Exhibition project
because the videos show many different types of themes and arrangements. On the
other hand, it doesn’t pertain fully because I felt like my work is unique and
full of things that remind me of myself.
3.
What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the
art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project? I felt the films were
very much like the last ones I watched they were put together and very interesting.
The videos have helped me come up with the ideas I have and has given me some
inspiration to the type of theme I want. Overall, the films gave a lot of
insight of what you might be looking for and were very helpful.

Step 4: Art Criticism Exercise
Title:
Reel Love Series/Bricklaying Upstream
Artist:
Jackie Felix
Year:
1987-1988
Media: oil
on canvas
Size:
60x120 inches
Analysis:
I found this art so nice and interesting. Just looking at the image you can
create your own story or interpretation of what’s going on. The artwork is
split in half. One side being red and the other side black. On the red side of
the artwork there are two figures a man and a woman hugging each other staring
each other in the eyes, the woman lifted in the air. While the other side it
was a sketch in white of a woman that’s nude looks like she’s falling from the
air.
Title:
Blood Oranges
Artist:
Jackie Felix
Year: 1997
Media: oil
on paper
Size:
21x30 inches
Analysis:
This piece of work also caught my eye. This was one of the artworks that used
brighter colors but still continued on with the same theme of sexuality. In the
piece the background is a sketch of a stage with curtains side by side in color
brown. With a nude female in the middle of the stage with her head tilt back
reaching for purple grapes from the ceiling. The background of the stage is
bright orange and coral helping the figure stand out each more.
Title: Moon over Malibu
Artist: Jackie Felix
Year: 1907-88
Media: oil on canvas
Size: 60x120 inches
Analysis: This image was
also a very interesting piece of work. The image is once again split in half. One
side being brighter than the other; one side yellow and the other side shades
of black and grey. On the yellow side there is a man in a straight jacket
hanging from the ceiling over a pool of water. While on the dark side there is
a man and a woman hugging each other passionately. I found that his piece of
work represents real love.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the first video called “Matisse and Picasso” the key concept to me was learning about the relationship between Matisse and Picasso. The video showed many examples of paintings that were created and it shows the process these artists went through to get to where they are today. In the second video “The Impact of Cubism”, I got to learn how Cubism came about and the impact it has on the 20th century. This film also focuses on many different pieces of artwork that were created using this element. Third film called “Dada and Surrealism” this film just focuses on how surrealism arose and how it opened many new places for artistic creation. Lastly, in “Expressionism” I felt the key concept was learning about the outgrowth of Fauvism.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
I felt like the videos relate to the readings in the text because the videos showed a lot of what I read in the textbook. I felt like the videos were a review of what I had just learned about.

Week 10: Art Making Mask
1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog (or link to your Photobucket account). Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces. The pieces I chose were called “Behold, the Ancestor, the second piece was called “Royal sister and wife”, and lastly “The Founder King”. I chose these masks because they each inspirited me somehow and they were all very unique pieces that I enjoyed learning about.
2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces. In the first mask I chose called “Behold, the Ancestor” really caught my attention it wasn’t like the typical mask this was a piece of art. It has huge circle that looks like a head full of hair, a huge nose that signifies suns fertilization of the earth, and finally the bulging eyes that represent the new moon and full moon. The second mask was called “Royal Sister and Wife” this mask also caught my eye because of its great detail and its relation to woman in general. The line represented in this mask gave me inspiration to create lines too. Lines in this mask illustrated tears and the pain of death which was really powerful to learn about. The last mask that I found interesting was “The Founder King” this was another piece that caught my eye because of its texture. The face was covered in leopard which gave it a unique design. It also had tons of shells and beads that created different patterns.
3. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask. Some elements that were incorporated into my piece were rhythm, texture, and line. If you look closely at my mask when painting it I was swirling around the colors of blue and green which created a unique texture. My mask also shows rhythm because of the overall flow of the mask all around you can see the same amount of designs on each side. Lastly, line is also illustrated in my piece from me drawing lines around the mask.
4. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask. My opinion on my finished piece was that it came out pretty good based on my limited supplies. I really enjoyed making this mask it made me feel like a little kid again. Not only was it fun coming up with different strategies but it was good to be hands on and creative again.
